Stephen Ashfield

Stephen has lived in Durham for a number of years where he ran a business before returning to teaching.

He loves the North-East and in particular is very proud to represent Shincliffe, where he used to bring his two children to play with their friends in the local park. His background is in education, a qualified teacher, and he has a Masters’ Degree in Environmental Management.

Stephen is family orientated and his children are a strong influence upon his drive to ensure that our community remains one that is safe and desirable to live in.

Stephen is actively involved in local issues and has been for a number of years.
The areas of the council that Stephen is working on are carbon reduction and finance (as he is the chair of the Finance Committee).

Ann Callaghan

Born in London, Ann has lived in High Shincliffe since 1997 and feels very much part of the community.

Her children, now grown up, attended Shincliffe Primary School. Ann is on the committee of Shincliffe Community Association and manages distribution of their newsletter. She is part of their Show Committee and assists with its Facebook page. Ann recently retired after 36 years working for Procter & Gamble, finishing as Sales Systems & Operations Director.

She is a qualified first aider and mental health first aider. Ann’s hobbies include family history/genealogy and sewing/dressmaking.

Bill Clatworthy

After a varied and interesting career in The Metropolitan Police; with some 25 years in C.I.D. Bill diversified, working as an Independent Adjudicator in Local Government.

Now retired he worships at St Mary’s Church, Shincliffe and has been a member of the Parochial Church Council for 8 years, actively engaged in Pastoral, Social and Community affairs and events including Parish Concerts, the Church Garden Party and promoting the Annual Grand Raffle. A member of The Church ‘Net Zero Group, Bill also manages the Church Facebook and ACNY pages on social media. Bill loves life in Shincliffe. His own family, neighbours, friends and many in the community, have encouraged him to fulfil his desire to continue to serve the public and our community and to become a member of Shincliffe Parish Council.

He is a ‘Team Player’ and hopes that he will be able to make a positive contribution to the workings of the Council having maintained an avid interest in local matters. He has lived in The Village for 10 years with his wife Margaret. They have two married daughters, four grandchildren and a Black Labrador.

Their eldest daughter lives in Durham; regularly visiting Shincliffe Village Play Park with Bill’s two older grandchildren; his youngest daughter and two other grandchildren live in Canada.

Hobbies include a love of the outdoors, ecology and the environment. He is a member of the National Trust, Durham Wildlife Trust, RSPB, loves reading, theatre and the arts. Bill also moderates the Shincliffe Parish Residents and Shincliffe Greenbelt facebook pages being a founder member of The Shincliffe Greenbelt Group, formed to preserve green spaces and the character and tranquil nature of the environment in which we all live. The potential future development of land within our Parish for residential and commercial use is of great concern and therefore creating a Local Neighbourhood Plan for our Parish is of the upmost importance and is a priority.

Elected as Chairperson of the Parish Horticultural Committee, having been a member of the RHS for some 30 years. He understands the undoubted effects of climate change which means we have to manage our green spaces with more sustainable and environmentally friendly planting preserving our ecosystem for future generations.

His interests in local affairs includes ‘Traffic management’; Parking and congestion in the village, speed reduction on the A177 and in High Shincliffe on the perimeter road and preventing further accidents and fatalities on the A177; and it is his hope that his knowledge and some expertise may assist in resolving these matters.

Bill believes in fairness, equality, inclusiveness, accessibility for all. Diversity, openness, transparency and clear communication in all matters of public life.

Bill is approachable, open minded and committed to resolving local issues, if at all possible.
